Blue Mondays becomes Comedy Turn ups!

Poppy’s in Melville has just turned up the game; no more long and depressing Mondays. The past Monday, the local restaurant in Melville hosted the likes of Dillan Oliphant, David Kibuuka, Warren Robertson, Nqoba Nqoba, Eric Jansen, Couch Ninja, Long John Comic, Rachel Neary Clarke, Ebenezer Dibakwane, Nina Haste and your MC for the night Prins VR for a night of laughter. This weekly dose of comedy provides a platform for professional as well as upcoming comedians to showcase their material and leave you entertained.

The gig “Monday Night Comedy” was formed in late 2013 in a venue called ‘The Lighthouse’ in 7th Street Melville. It was founded by the comedy geniuses Eureka Nkese and Gavin Kelly. The gig was run and maintained by comedians Eureka Nkese, Gavin Kelly, Prins and Dillan Oliphant. In late 2014 the Lighthouse closed down and the gig was also discontinued. In 2015 the gig was re-launched by Prins and an event’s organizer by the name of Qaanita Ernest at Poppy’s Restaurant in Melville. The gig is now run and maintained by comedians Prins, Gavin Kelly, Dillan Oliphant and Mo Mothebe.

The highlight of this weekly ‘Monday Night Stand-Up Comedy’ is that it is absolutely free!!! All you have to do is turn up alone or with friends and prepare to be entertained. The crowed is filled with people from all around Jozi with an occasional visit by tourists (Americans visiting South Africa). The set-up is not all that grand but it allows for an intimate feeling with the comedians. Poppy’s team makes your visit and experience comfortable; as they deliver your drinks and snacks to your seat.  Not all the acts provide the same level of satisfaction but remember it’s free so why complain. However, overall you are guaranteed to have had one of the best nights of your life. A few weeks back, Conrad Koch and his black puppet “Chester” performed at one of these gigs and left the audience in tears; happy tears.

Regarding the performances on Monday night; I was thoroughly impressed with the MC “Prins VR” as his radiant personality kept the crowd engaged and intrigued. David Kibuuka and Nqoba Nqoba are extremely hilarious and captivating. You can keep connected with this Comedy madness by liking their Facebook page and or following them on twitterMonday Night C
