The Opening of the new Gillooly’s Interchange flyover

1 June is the day a lot of us that travel through the Gillooly’s Interchange has been waiting for. At 07:30 on 1 June the new Gillooly’s Interchange fly over bridge was opened, making the connection from the N12 West to the N3 North a breeze. It was reported that after the ribbon was cut and the road opened, the traffic flowed smoothly on the new fly over. Just be warned that the speed limit is 60 km/h for now. This will be bumped up once we get used to the new road. Thank you to Lindie Marriott from CMC and Bazil Calogero from i-traffic.co.za for information and pictures.

I did the flyover this morning… was very cool

  2. Jennie Quinn says:

Can anyone tell me what the significance of the yellow hands by the Gillooly’s Interchange is all about?

  3. Dale says:

    Hi Jennie

I don’t think there is any real significance to the hands, besides decor for the World Cup. But i stand to be corrected. They look great though. I drove past there about an hour ago and they are being maintained. If you find out more, please post another reply for us.

  4. The project’s titled Many Hands and is a land-art installation by South African artist Strijdom van der Merwe. It’s sponsored by Gauteng Government and was managed by us (AAW!) in a record under-10-days from start to finish. The installation includes 20 000 hands installed like sci-fi flowers all around the interchange at Gillooly’s, using strong people with fierce hearts on hard ground in the midst of mad traffic.

The same artist also directed a team of us to wrap hundreds of trees in bright orange dayglo fabric from the airport road into Jhb. We used 5km of fabric.

All the material used in the project will be recycled to become timber-plastic that can be used to make decking and furniture that lasts for a long time outside.

Does anyone know where I can find photos of the hands – I want to do a scrapbook layout about the World Cup and a photo of the hands would be nice for the layout. Thanks!
