Wikipedia blacks out their English website for 24 hour! Why?
Starting at 05:00 UTC, 18 January 2012 Wikipedia turned off access to the world in protest to the proposed legislation of the “Stop Piracy Act (SOPA) in the United States. Wikipedia says that if the act were passed, it would seriously damage the free and open internet, including Wikipedia.
Other large websites such as Google and Reddit will also set a protest the controversial bill in same way or another.
So what is SOPA?
There are two bills in play, 1: The Stop Online Piracy Act, known as SOPA, in the House and 2: sister legislation called the Protect IP Act, or PIPA, in the Senate. Both are designed to tackle the problem of foreign-based websites that sell pirated movies, music and other products.
