Piazza Rocks at Montecasino


After six weeks. 42 days of non-stop entertainment, the Ayoba Festival at Montecasino will draw to a close with a sensational one-night only concert billed “Piazza Rocks” on 03rd December 2011 from 14h00 to 22h30.

Presented by MK and Tuks FM in association with Hilltop Live, the awesome line-up features some of the best local bands including SAMA and MTV Award winners, Zebra & Giraffe; double-gold status rock and pop group, Die Heuwels Fantasties; international and local touring musician, Farryl Purkiss;  edgy pop duo, The Arrows;  the ever popular double Top 10 hit band,  The Graeme Watkins Project; trendy trio and MK number one chart toppers, Southern Gypsey Queen;  alternative rock band, Kinky Robot and the new up and coming melodic rock band, The Newspapers.

Zebra & Giraffe

The Indie rock band Zebra& Giraffe broke into the music charts with their debut album Collected Memories which produced top ten singles and achieved numerous number ones on the biggest National and College radio stations around South Africa. The SAMA and MTV award winning band includes; Greg Carli, Alan Shenton, Andrew Maskell, Darren Leader whom are all passionate about music.  Zebra & Giraffe’s second album titled The Insider, is the bands finest work to date.

Die Heuwels Fantasties

Sensational rock and pop group Die Heuwels Fantasties was formed in 2008 along with their own record label named Supra Familias. The band includes; Pierre Greeff, Hunter Kennedy, Fred den Hartog and Philip Erasmus. In 2010 Die Heuwels Fantasties self titled album achieved gold status. Die Heuwels Fantasties were honoured the opportunity to be the General Ambassadors for the Rugby World Cup 2011 which recently took place in New Zealand and their latest offering Wilder as Die Wildtuin just reached gold status making it a rewarding year for the pop musicians.

Farryl Purkiss

The chart breaking Farryl Purkiss released an E.P in 2005 which made waves in Durban, sealing him a lucrative deal with the recording company 2 Feet Music. The self titled, first debut album in 2006 reached international status giving him the opportunity to tour in numerous countries such as Australia and the UK. In 2007 he was voted as the most popular musician, featured in every major newspaper, TV show and radio.

The hit track Better Days from his debut album peaked at number 3 on the 5FM top 40, and the song La-Di-Da reached number 1 on the French national radio. Farryl Purkiss second offering is Fruitbats & Crows.

The Arrows

The edgy pop duo, The Arrows are rapidly setting a trend in the music industry. Durbanites Pam de Menez and Christie Desfontaine released their first EP in 2007, attracting more than 4000 fans , following the release of their debut single Next Time which became an instant favourite on national radio. The current single Love sick track has seen them become players on a global scale. The Arrows describe their band as professional, knowing what they want.

The Graeme Watkins Project

Popularly known band The Graeme Watkins Project took the music scene by storm with their debut album Corridors of The Mind. In just four months of their 2011 debut album, they produced 2 Top 10 hit singles. The group’s music is described as an edgy, rough medley of pop, indie and rock. The chart breaking single, the Music Affair showcased their impressive song writing skills.

The phenomenal band which includes Graeme Watkins, Ryno Zeelie, Rudo Pieterse and Matthew Marinus has made a mark in the rock genre as the new and rapidly rising band.

Southern Gypsey Queen

Known for giving unforgettable performances, Southern Gypsey Queen is a rock band of note. Formed in the Eastern Cape, the bands trendy trio includes Tammy Wilson and two brothers Gareth and Paul Wilson. The group’s first album released in 2004 titled Sweet Voodoo had a hit single Who we Are, which reached the number two spot on the music channel MK, whilst the second single Song for the Captain reached the top spot, sitting at number one for six weeks on the MK music chart.

Kinky Robot

The alternative rock band Kinky Robot based in Johannesburg saw the rise of their music in 2010 with their first hit single Hobie Beach. The rock band features Martin Bester, James Nelson, Fabio Cohn and Pieter Rossouw.  The hit track Hobie Beach enjoyed airplay on more than 15 radio stations across South Africa, charting at number 1 on stations like Kfm, Highveld stereo and TUKS fm.

Kinky Robot’s new single is Lover of Life. The Bands live performances have shone the night life of clubs.

The Newspapers

The Melodic Rock band, The Newspapers have set a trend on the rhythmic stages of Pretoria. Originally from Witbank, the four man band which formed in 2008 includes lead vocals Meredith Harmse, drummer Brink Jacobs, guitarist Jared Cowley and the highly experienced bass guitarist Stefan Henrico. The Newspapers first single King Of No Book  off their E.P enjoyed air play on various campus stations; UCT Radio, PUK FM. The rock band had the opportunity to share stages with numerous local industry heavyweights such as Fokofpolisiekar, Tidal Waves, aKING and Prime Circle.
