It is possible to find a career that you love… I did

I never knew what I wanted to do “when I grew up”. At the age of 26 I still did not know what I wanted to be when I grew up. I was trapped in a job that I hated, I was up to my eyeballs in debt and I was depressed and really unhappy with life. I applied for other jobs for years and never got a response or success. I thought that there was no way out and all I was going to do for the rest of my life was to do I job I hate and pay debt at the end of the month.

After 7 years of doing the job that I hated I decided that it had to stop. Life had to be better than what I was getting.  I looked at my life and looked at what I enjoy doing and what made me happy. From school days I had an interest in computers. I played around with the hardware aspect for a long time and then started making websites just for fun. I looked at this interest and decided that, that’s what I want to do. But now at 27 how was I going to start a brand new career?

I told myself “I have got nothing to loose.”  I applied for a study loan through the company I was working for and completed a one year course that taught me the basics in web design and web development. I learned so much in that year and became more motivated to make a career out of this exciting path that I had discovered.

A few weeks later a friend of mine informed me of a position that was open for an intern web developer.  Right there and then I sent my CV off to them and was surprised to receive an interview request the very next day. After the interview I was told by the interviewers that they can see I have a passion to learn more and grow and that they were prepared to give me a chance.

I did it… I found a new job, a job in something that I wanted to do. My bad mood and depression was lifted right there and then. I was set free as such.  I never thought it would feel so good to resign. I finished up with my old job on Christmas Eve 2009 then after a short holiday I started my new job on 3 January 2010.

I have not regretted one moment! I have paid off my debt, I have learned and still learning a great load, I have met great people and I am happy. It has made such a difference in my life to do what I love and I made what I thought was the impossible, possible.  It can be done.  If you have a passion, then pursue it! Make yourself happy… No one is going to do it for you.
